Renal Pathology

With more than 300 cases per year, the renal pathology service of the NYU Department of Pathology, directed by Laura Barisoni, M.D., provides excellent diagnostic care for medical renal diseases. Our pathologists work closely with nephrologists, rheumatologists, and the tranplant team throughout the NYU School of Medicine and outside practices, providing comprehensive diagnostic tissue interpretation of renal biopsies including light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy. The renal pathology service also provides full work up for Alport's disease in both renal and skin tissue, amyloid characterization in Fine Needle Aspiration biopsies from the abdominal wall, kidney, and other organ systems, and immunohistochemical analysis for specific podocyte proteins that may be affected in genetic forms of nephrotic syndrome. NYU renal pathologists participate in a variety of interdepartmental conferences for patient management and care. Dr. Barisoni also teaches national and international CME accredited renal pathology courses.
