Urologic Pathology

The Urologic Pathology service of the NYU Department of Pathology provides skilled interpretation in the diagnosis of urologic diseases in conjunction with clinical pathologic correlation. Expertise exists in interpretation of prostate, bladder, penile and testis biopsies, as well as surgical specimens from kidney, testis, bladder, prostate and theadrenal gland.

Under the direction of Jonathan Melamed, M.D. (New York magazine's Best Doctors), the team of four pathologists interpret over 1800 operative and biopsy cases. Inter-observer consistency and joint expertise for challenging cases are assured by daily consensus reviews.

Turnaround Time: Prostate and bladder biopsy specimens have a turnaround time frame of 24-36 hours. Specimens received by 5pm are processed overnight withdiagnoses reported the next business day. If immunohistochemical studies are required, the turnaround time frame is up to 72 hours. Excision specimens including radical prostatectomy and cystectomy specimens have a 3-5 day turnaround.

Safety: Universal precautions are followed.
