Breast Pathology

The Breast Pathology service of the NYU Department of Pathology provides skilled interpretation in the diagnosis of diseases of the breast in conjunction with clinical pathologic correlations. As part of a multidisciplinary approach, immunohistochemistry and molecular biologic techniques provide patients with tailored treatment options. Under the direction of Baljit Singh, M.D., and in cooperation with the NYU Cancer Institute, the Department is also involved in the acquisition of breast tumor tissue for tumor banking. Over 1300 breast biopsies from operations are interpreted annually.

Turnaround Time
Breast core biopsy specimens have a turnaround timeframe of 24–36 hours. Specimens received by 3 pm are processed overnight with diagnoses reported the next business day. Excision specimens and mastectomy specimens have a 3–5 day turnaround.

Safety: Universal precautions are followed.
