Training Tracks

Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Track: This option is open to those with diverse career goals and can be modified to meet individual objectives. The flexibility and diversity of this program make it equally suitable for those interested in Academic or Community Hospital Pathology practice. Residents in the combined track are expected to: a) become proficient in all routine areas of AP and gain exposure to the major subspecialty areas; b) obtain a balanced training in the four major areas of Clinical Pathology (Hematology, Blood Banking, Microbiology, and Chemistry; c) choose an area of concentration in Clinical Pathology and undertake a research project in their area of concentration; d) gain experience in laboratory management.

Anatomic Pathology Track: Residents in this track are expected to: a) become proficient in the areas of Surgical and Autopsy Pathology, Cytopathology, Gynecologic Pathology, and Dermatopathology; b) gain a solid experience in a subspecialty area of AP; and c) complete one year of focused training, including a research project in the area of concentration. Residents in this track spend 18 months in core rotations, 6 months in elective rotations, 12 months in a specialty area of AP and 12 months in a combination of service rotations and Junior Attending.

Anatomic/Research Track: The goal is to train individuals who want to pursue a career in Academic Pathology. Residents complete the AP core rotations and electives, then spend the following two years of research in an area of their interest. The faculty research interests cover a broad spectrum with strong concentrations in molecular and cellular immunology, in RNA and DNA oncogenic viruses, in eukaryotic gene function and regulation, and in several areas of cellular and molecular biology. Residents, in collaboration with a faculty mentor, are requested to submit a proposal to the Residents’ Advisory Committee in the middle of the second year and are encouraged to apply for extramural funding. Graduates of the program are able to function as independent investigators, and as competent diagnostic surgical/anatomic pathologists.

A particularly attractive attribute of the academic setting at NYU is the accessibility of a wide range of experts in the Department of Pathology as well as other departments within the University.

In departmental weekly Grand Rounds, often given by nationally known invited speakers, NYU faculty and residents, diverse topics of practical and theoretical interest are presented. A variety of seminars and lectures ongoing in Pathology, and in all the basic science and clinical departments of the Medical School offer ample opportunity for interdisciplinary experience.

Anatomic/Neuropathology Track: Our program offers an extraordinary opportunity to see a large number and wide variety of CNS tumors. Furthermore, a number of our faculty perform research in areas related to neuropathology. We provide a combined AP/NP program leading to eligibility for combined certification in Anatomic and Neuropathology.
