Neuropathology Fellowship

Director: Thomas Wisniewski, M.D. Professor of Neurology, Pathology and Psychiatry / Understanding conformational disorders such as AD and prion related disease

Description: Two fellowships. Our two-year ACGME accredited program provides training in all aspects of neuropathology, including extensive exposure to surgical neuropathology at one of the nation’s largest adult and pediatric neurosurgical centers. Specimens derive from four hospitals, including Tisch Hospital (the university hospital of NYUMC) and Bellevue Hospital Center, New York City’s flagship public hospital, as well as an active referral practice. The laboratory accessions over 1900 neurosurgical specimens a year, including over 550 tumors, ranging from stereotaxic biopsies to gross resections and including many infectious and epileptic cases. Muscle biopsies derive from diverse populations, including the NYUMC muscular dystrophy center. We examine over 200 diverse pediatric and adult autopsy brains a year.

Research activities focus on clinical-pathological and basic science neurooncology, but also involve the Aging & Dementia Research Center. Substantial AIDS-related material is available. Associations with neurology, basic neuroscience, and neurosurgery, allow diverse clinical and basic research opportunities. New York City has an active neuropathology community, including regular bimonthly neuropathology meetings.

Requirements: Preference is given to candidates who have completed at least 2 years of Anatomic Pathology residency, or to those with completed Neurology or Neurosurgery training. Candidates requiring additional AP training must also apply to the general pathology program of the Department and must hold a NY State License.

Stipends: Commensurate with candidate’s level of training.
